Stop those leaks! Insulation and Weatherization
Let’s start at the top: The Attic
Often people are not aware of the heated air leaving at the top of the house. These attic air leakage locations can be just as responsible for comfort and efficiency problems as heated air leaking through windows. In fact sealing a hole at the ceiling level will result in fewer drafts at lower levels. First check the insulation in your attic, and ceilings to see if it meets the levels recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy. The higher the R-value, the better your roof will resist heat loss. To find out if you have enough attic insulation, measure the thickness of the insulation. If there is less than R-22 (7 inches of fiber glass) you could probably benefit by adding more. Most homes should have between R-22 and R-49 insulation in the attic. Gaps around ceiling fixtures should be caulked. Pull down stairs, attic hatches and kneewall doors should be insulated and weather-stripped.
